A circus; that was the best way Aaron could describe what he saw ahead of them in the clearing between the forest and the base of a mountain.

Thousands of gaudily colored tents of all sizes were scattered around the area, which was alive in a way unlike anything he'd seen thus far in this world. There was music and the smell of cooking food, and despite the late hour, thousands of people moved about, everything from fighters in heavy, metal armor to half-naked Inepts. Aaron even saw a public brawl, with people around it cheering loudly and placing bets.

Most tents were grouped around vertical banners, hung from tall masts, carefully lit to show off their coat of arms. Most of the crests on display were simple geometric symbols reminiscent of the circle inside the triangle on Logan and Lana's robes. Only five had depictions of weapons or representations of the elements, and those were displayed on masts far taller than all the others.

"Does no one in this kingdom have any sense of aesthetics?" Aaron asked no one in particular.

"Sorry?" Alys, who was nearby, replied.

"These banners are horrible. Where are the powerful creatures, the dragons or phoenixes? Or well-designed and detailed coats of arms? Heavens, look at that!" He pointed, "That crest is a red square on a yellow background!"

Alys gave an embarrassed smile. "It's not a matter of choice. The gods have a very rigid system in place for clan crests."

"Oh?" He raised an eyebrow.

"There are many rules, which are all carefully explained when you're trying to create a clan, but I remember the first twenty.

"First, within each empire, banners must be unique. It's very hard to create a crest no one else has, especially if you want it to look good. Most people don't even bother trying anymore.

"Second, to use divine beasts, like the dragons or phoenixes you suggested, a clan must belong to the imperial royal family or be at the SSS tier. As far as I know, there is no clan higher than the S tier in the entire empire.

"Third, to use other types of beasts, a clan must, at the minimum, belong to an imperial duke or a vassal kingdom's Monarch, or be at the SS tier. Illyria's king lucked out, being able to still use a griffin, but you won't find his flag here, where he set up a trap.

"Fourth, to use man-made objects, like swords, shields, and so on, a clan must at least belong to an imperial noble or a vassal kingdom's duke, or be at the S tier. Those three clans are led by local dukes." She pointed out three banners, two of which bore swords and the third, a halberd.

"Fifth, to use the elements of nature, a clan must at least belong to an imperial citizen or a vassal kingdom's noble, or be at the A tier. Those other two clans belong to nobles." Once again, she pointed out the respective banners, one with a flame and the other a cloud.

"Sixth, a clan may only ever change their banner a single time.
